Editorial Policy

Sourcing, checking, bylines, dates and commercial links, set out so you can judge what you read on Annodex.

Why this page exists

Publishing about video editing, captions, podcasting and streaming without saying how you work is asking for trust you have not earned. This is how we work.

Where money enters

A few of the links here make us money. That covers the running costs and stops well short of buying a kinder paragraph around them.

If a partner asks us to remove a criticism, the answer is no, and the request itself may end up mentioned in a future article.

How a draft is built

  1. Draft from experience, not from a page of search results.
  2. Underline every claim that rests on memory rather than a source.
  3. Support it or lose it. Each underline is backed by something we can name, or it comes out.
  4. A cold read by a second person catches the confident guesses the writer stopped seeing.

Who signs the work

Bylines are real people with real archives attached. If you disagree with a piece, you can see what else the same person has written and judge accordingly.

Ottilie Varga, Video editor and colourist. Ottilie cut documentaries for a decade before she started writing about editing workflow. She cares about folder structures, proxy files and the boring habits that let an editor think about story instead of storage.

Tariq Bellweather, Audio and podcast producer. Tariq learned audio at a community radio station and now produces interview podcasts. He writes about microphones, rooms and editing speech so that it sounds natural, and he has strong opinions about loudness.

Philippa Brennagh, Captioning and archive lead. Philippa worked as a freelance subtitler for broadcasters and game studios. She writes about captions, transcripts and archives, and she believes good metadata is a form of kindness to your future self.

How we date articles

The date you see is real. A tidy up of wording leaves it alone; only a change to what the piece recommends moves the modified date, along with a note saying so.

Picking subjects

We keep a running list of questions readers send us, plus questions we had ourselves and could not find a straight answer to. A topic gets written when it appears on that list more than once.

Things you will not find here

  • Guarantees. Nobody in this field can honestly offer one.
  • Filler written to occupy a topic rather than to answer it.
  • Anything we would be embarrassed to defend in person.

Corrections

Send the page and the problem to info@annodex.org. Typos are fixed silently. Facts are fixed quickly. Conclusions that turn out to be wrong are corrected in the open, with a note saying what we previously said.
